“OSAGE ORANGE or Bois d’Arc

Rounded tree, to 40 to 50 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide. Moderate rate of growth. Native through much of Central Texas, and adapted to many other portions of the state. Tree is coarse and craggy, but brings wonderful texture to landscape. Extremely durable. Stumps were used decades ago for leveling pier-and-beam houses, and are still intact these many years later.

Two main objections are large thorns and messy fruit. There are thornless, male (fruitless) selections in the nursery trade, although they’re seldom seen in Texas nurseries.
